On the last day of filming “Bride Hard,” star Rebel Wilson accidentally got hit in the face with a gun.
“It split my face open, and I went straight to the hospital,” she says. “A plastic surgeon had to put my nose back. If it had happened before it would have been ‘game over,’ right?”
All during filming, Wilson was thrilled she didn’t have an accident. “And, then, it was just a freak accident at 3 a.m. on the last day.”

Still, the actress says she enjoyed the fight sequences and wondered if, maybe, an action film would be in her future. “Maybe I can be a funny character in an action franchise,” she says.
In “Bride Hard,” she’s the maid of honor who’s also a secret agent. When she tries to get out of the heavy lifting the maid of honor has to do, she’s demoted but still required to attend — because there could be an “incident” at the wedding.

The bride? That’s Anna Camp, who co-starred with Wilson in the “Pitch Perfect” films.
“As soon as I got sent the script and saw she was playing Sam, I was like, ‘I have to play Betsy’ because I feel like our friendship will translate on screen,” Camp says.

First impressions
The two first met on an audition for a TV series (both thought the other would get the part; Melissa Rauch ended up with it), then bonded the first days of “Pitch Perfect.”
“We met in a capella boot camp,” Wilson says. “We went out to dinner and I felt we had some kind of connection from that very first day.”
“I’ve always felt she was very funny,” Camp says. “I just respected her talent and her comic genius.”
“I think Anna is one of the world’s best actresses,” Wilson counters. “I actually thought maybe we would do a Broadway play together, but I always knew I wanted to do something with her. So when this opportunity came up, I just knew I wanted to have Anna as part of that.”
Camp plays the bride, Betsy; Wilson is the demoted maid of honor. Both spent much of the shoot in wedding attire.
“The sixth week of shooting, when I saw that thing hanging in my trailer, (I said), ‘Please don’t make me put it on today,’ because it was so hot and tight,” Camp says.
The film was shot in Savannah, Georgia, where, Wilson says, “we would sweat through the dresses, which was probably very good for our skin.”
Thankfully, costume designer Salvador Perez Jr. had plenty of backup dresses the actresses could substitute.
“He’s really good at doing a few little tricks, like putting a little elastic here because some of my movements were quite explosive,” Wilson says. “I’m swinging a fire hose and I had to have things secured so it wasn’t a ‘boob-alicious’ take. I wore a corset underneath the dress, which was, at times, a bit much but I do like the look of it in the movie. It’s not often you see a girl fighting in a bridesmaid’s dress, so it works.”

Rebel’s wedding
While Camp says she loves the idea of a big wedding — “I always end up crying and I like having all of the free champagne, the food and celebrating people’s love” — Wilson opted for a small destination wedding for her 2024 marriage to fashion/jewelry designer Ramona Agruma.
“It was small because it was originally going to be family and then we extended it out to a few friends at the last minute.”
The couple celebrated in Sardinia and later had a ceremony in Sydney, Australia, so Wilson’s 95-year-old grandmother could attend.
“Ours was actually quite small but, oh, god, the food was so wonderful. Food,” she says, “is the key.”
Now, because she has been looking at wedding-related things, Wilson has been getting other people’s wedding photos on her phone “all the time. I’m curious and I start looking at them, then I want to see what they wore and what their reception was like. I kind of get into it. I don’t think I would have been like that a few years earlier.”

It all works out
The home where “Bride Hard” was filmed was “absolutely stunning,” Camp says, (“Forrest Gump” was filmed there, Wilson adds) and hot, thus the sweating.
A bridal crew is necessary, she says, but the maid of honor is definitely the worst job of them all. “It’s too much pressure … and I understand that.”
The bachelorette party is part of the gig, Wilson adds, but can be fun.
Add in all the action scenes and “Bride Hard” was “great cardio,” she adds. “It was almost like I didn’t have to go to the gym that day because I was having fun on the set. Getting paid to exercise and burning calories while you’re at it is great.”
