The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, in a hearing co-chaired by Missouri’s Eric Schmitt, heard testimony Wednesday, June 18, 2025, on former President Biden’s alleged mental decline in office. Ranking Democrat Dick Durbin of Illinois asked why the committee wasn’t focused on its oversight responsibilities or asking about President Donald Trump’s cognitive abilities.

To harvest more information about the mental fitness of former President Joe Biden, U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt has opened the hotlines.
The Missouri Republican is asking anyone who interacted with Biden — dealings in which Biden’s “mental decline was evident” — to confidentially submit the information by sending an email to “bidentips@schmitt.senate.gov.”
On Wednesday, Schmitt and U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, a Texas Republican, opened a to investigate who was running the country during Biden’s apparent cognitive decline.
In an interview, Schmitt said the hearing will be “shining a light” on Biden’s health, as well as examining who was making executive decisions.

“Who was in charge?” Schmitt said.
The hearing was not well-received by Democrats, who mostly stayed away.
U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, an Illinois Democrat who is the ranking minority member on the committee, — and chided the committee for focusing on the matter.
“Apparently, armchair diagnosing former President Biden is more important than ... issues of grave concern,” Durbin said.
Questions surrounding Biden’s health, and mainstream media’s reluctance to report on it, is undergoing scrutiny in part due to a new book co-authored by CNN anchor Jake Tapper.
Once a staunch defender of Biden, Tapper now claims that those closest to Biden orchestrated a cover-up of his decline.
The book alleges that top aides worked behind the scenes to hide what it calls the president’s mental and physical decline from public view.
