ST. LOUISÌý— A Ó£ÌÒÊÓÆµ police officer shot a man Saturday who was fleeing from police in the Princeton Heights neighborhood, authorities said.
Ó£ÌÒÊÓÆµ police officers tried to pull over a Ford pickup truck after they got an alert from a license-plate reader that the truck had been stolen in Richmond Heights. The driver didn't stop for officers at Page Boulevard and Walton Avenue, and drove off.
Court records said the truck raced along residential streets at speeds of up to 80 mph. It eventually crashed into a pole in an alley between Thekla and Lillian avenues, Ó£ÌÒÊÓÆµ police Detective Tracey Chaney said in court records.
The driver got out and hid in a nearby yard. Police later identified him as 55-year-old Vincent Lamont Simmons.

An officer shot Simmons while trying to arrest him, police said. Simmons was shot in the torso. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition.Ìý
Police said officers found a firearm in the vehicle. The department's Force Investigation Unit will examine the use of force.
Three days after the shooting, Ó£ÌÒÊÓÆµ prosecutors charged Simmons with resisting arrest, unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance. Police said they found cocaine in his sock at the hospital, Chaney said.
Simmons lives in the 1300 block of Woodruff Avenue in Pagedale.Ìý
