CLAYTON — Prosecutors on Thursday charged the grandmother of a 4-year-old in the child's shooting death in Castle Point.
Detrice Young, 56, faces two felony counts of endangering the welfare of a child. She was in custody Thursday on a $50,000 bond.
Prosecutors says Young was at her home in the 10500 block of Castle Drive with three grandchildren — ages 2, 4 and 11 — and their two adult aunts on Monday afternoon when everyone went to sleep.
The aunts told police a single gunshot woke them up at about 1:45 p.m.
The women ran into Young's room and found 4-year-old Aubreeyonna Muex at the end of Young's bed with the 2-year-old, police said. The gun was near the children and Aubreeyonna had been shot.
She died at a hospital.
In a police interview, officers said that Young admitted to owning the gun and told them she sleeps with it under her pillow.
