METRO EAST — A 3.5-mile stretch of Interstate 255 in Cahokia Heights and Sauget is expected to reopen by 6 p.m. Saturday, weather permitting, after a construction-related shutdown of more than four months.
The reopening will take place more than six weeks ahead of schedule, the Illinois Department of Transportation said. The segment is between Illinois Highway 157 and Illinois Highway 15.
IDOT said closing the interstate in both directions instead of phasing in the work saved an estimated $10 million.
The $65.4-million project included replacement of badly deteriorated pavement, bridge repairs, new lighting and guardrails, safety upgrades and improved signs and drainage.
IDOT previously rehabbed a 7.5-mile segment of 255 between Highway 15 and Old Collinsville Road in 2020. The agency also plans three more additional phases of rehabbing other stretches of 255, but the timelines have yet to be determined.
