ST. LOUIS   •   A 13-year-old student is in police custody today after authorities say he brought a handgun to school Wednesday and showed it to classmates.
The unloaded handgun was found inside Jefferson Elementary School at 1301 Hogan Street on Wednesday morning, said Patrick Wallace, a spokesman for Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵ Public Schools. The boy did not have the gun on him when administrators seized it. Officials then called police.
A police spokeswoman said the boy showed the gun to at least three students but it is not clear if he pointed it at anyone.
Wallace said he could not comment specifically on the child's enrollment but said district policy requires automatic suspensions for students who bring guns to school. The policy also requires a meeting with parents before students caught with guns can return to school.
