ST. LOUIS COUNTY — Faced with rising COVID-19 admissions, Mercy Hospital South plans to delay some elective procedures, a hospital official said Monday.
Dr. Aamina Akhtar, an infectious disease specialist and the chief medical officer of Mercy Hospital South, said the hospital will delay procedures that are not urgent and require longer hospital stays.
Hospital officials are working through the details, said Mercy spokesman Joe Poelker, and there is not an established date yet for when the hospital will start postponing these procedures. Poelker said that as of Monday, Mercy Hospital South is the only local hospital in the system that is taking this step.
BJC HealthCare on Monday began canceling some elective surgeries and other procedures. The health system said it did so in order to increase hospital capacity and preserve staffing.
