I moved back to the city after having left several years before. Nothing quite matches the vibrancy and character of the city, and that is what drew me back. I am also seeing more clearly the level of leadership we are fortunate to have here and how they are leading the charge to reduce crime and eradicate violence in troubled areas, such as what is going on in the College Hill neighborhood ("Police will flood area troubled by crime," Feb. 6).
It only takes a handful of thugs and criminals to cast a pall over an entire part of the city and stigmatize honest, law-abiding residents. I am proud of Mayor Francis G. Slay and Police Chief Sam Dotson for their commitment to the good citizens of College Hill and their innovative approach to handling the problem. The saturation of the area, and the fact that they are holding roll call right on the street, will undoubtedly let the citizens and criminals alike know that the police are there to stay. I was skeptical of city control of the police department, but if this is the type of proactive leadership we can expect in relation to the new configuration, then I am sold. Chief Dotson has been very impressive in his tenure thus far, and his ability to partner with the mayor and other components of City Hall enables him to bring more and better resources to bear on crime.

Gaining control of our police department is an historic event. The continued outstanding leadership of the mayor and chief will only further demonstrate the good hands we find ourselves in.
