In a month where the Cardinals’ top minor league bats have been as hot as the temperature outside, the past week of action has seen a major reversal in offensive production.
However, not all of the Cardinals’ top prospects struggled over the past week. That included a pitcher who registered a quality start after two rocky outings for Class AAA Memphis.
Updates on top 10 prospects
JJ Wetherholt, SS, Class AA Springfield: Wetherholt, who had been one of the hottest hitters in Class AA in recent weeks, has cooled off over his past four appearances, going just 2 of 14 at the plate. He did have a solid outing June 20, going 2 of 3 with a walk. Despite the colder stretch, he’s still slashing .375/.518/.516 in June.
Quinn Mathews, LHP, Class AAA Memphis: Mathews had arguably his worst start of the season against Durham on Tuesday. In just 1 1/3 innings, he walked six batters while allowing five earned runs. The Bulls went on to win 15-6. Walks have been a major issue for Mathews in 2025, as he’s given up 30 in 32 1/3 innings pitched. Tuesday marked his third appearance this season allowing six walks.

He recorded a double in the top of the ninth against Durham on Thursday, and he scored on a single by Matt Koperniak to bring Memphis within a run. Unfortunately for the Redbirds, they couldn’t complete the comeback, falling 3-2 to the Bulls.
Rainiel Rodriguez, C, Low-A Palm Beach: Rodriguez has consistently found ways to get on base lately. Over his past three appearances entering Friday, he’s tallied four hits and five walks.
Yairo Padilla, SS, FCL Cardinals: Padilla has rebounded from a cold stretch nicely. He’s recorded a hit in each of his past three appearances entering Friday.
Chase Davis, OF, Class AA Springfield: Davis still hasn’t been able to find a consistent rhythm at the plate. He’s gone just 1 of 14 over his last four appearances.
Michael McGreevy, RHP, Class AAA Memphis: McGreevy made a spot start for Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵ against the Cubs on Tuesday, but he was roughed up against the National League Central leaders. In 4 2/3 innings, McGreevy allowed seven hits and five earned runs, all of which came in the top of the third inning. A two-RBI single by Kyle Tucker was quickly followed by a three-run home run by Seiya Suzuki. Luckily for McGreevy, the Cardinals offense picked up the slack, as Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵ took Game 2 by a score of 8-7.

Cardinals starting pitcher Tekoah Roby throws during the third inning of a spring training game against the Astros on Friday, Feb. 28, 2025, in West Palm Beach, Fla.
